Hyde Park Austin

Hyde Park is known to me as a “doll house community”. I call it that because of the style of the neighborhood and its homes. Many of the homes look like doll houses, with its Victorian architecture and large inviting porches. Lush landscaping and various exterior paint styles also create this little doll house look.

Where is Hyde Park?

Hyde Park is located in the north part of central Austin. The community is very convenient to both University of Texas and downtown Austin. The neighborhood resides just north of both UT and downtown. Its boundaries are roughly 38th street running north through 51st street. The east west boundaries are Interstate 35 and Guadalupe. Hyde Park’s central location is convenient for those living in other central areas like Rosedale, Brykerwoods and Mueller Airport.

Hyde Park Favorites

Some of my favorite spots reside in this central Austin neighborhood. Hot spots such as Quak’s and Dolce Vita have been long time hang outs of mine for many years. Some other favorite spots are the Elizabet Ney Museum and the Hyde Park pool and park. It’s a great place to take a stroll to view the historical homes and lush landscaping that are so synonymous with this area. The streets in Hyde Park are great for navigating on bike, foot, moped or what have you. Wide with fantastic scenery is what you’ll find here!

History of Hyde Park

Hyde Park was established by Martin Shipe in the late 1890’s as a streetcar community. Yes, actual street cars made up this area as a commuter area, basically a suburb. Similar suburbs were springing up in other areas of Texas at the time, including a well known area in Houston. Electric streetcars made transportation to the city much easier for these outskirt communities. And at the time Hyde Park was indeed an outskirt community. Originally there was a large man made lake in the middle of Hyde Park, it was built as

part of the suburban charm.

Martin Shipe’s home still stands and is now a charming bed & breakfast.
